The Nairobi streets is one of the biggest noisy streets in Kenya. People hurriedly walk in their various place of work. In order to be adapt in city life like Nairobi you need to be smart and not get fooled easily by con men. Defeat is one of the things most people don’t want to be referred to as even if they are. The prestige that comes with living in the city requires one not to be a fool since the people from the rural community believe that the Nairobian`s are people who are mature enough.
Vulnerability: When one admits that he/she is lost it carries a heavy burden of been weak. Nairobian`s liked to portrayed as smart people not as an “old person”. Many residences tend to be courageous even if things go sideways. They have that perception that “ukipotea njia ndo utazua” meaning when you get lost is when you shall know the way.
Social prestige: Admitting defeat is a sign of weakness which most residence don’t like to be captured with. It also a sign of shame as one thinks he/she will be belittled which at times happens in certain situations. Everyone what to be seen as smart and not foolish guy.
Peer and Social pressure: As a Nairobian residence people are under an influence that one should be knowledgeable on every corner of the streets. One is forced to suffer in silence so as to maintain his/ her public image especially among peers. The busy nature of Nairobi streets does not give room for people to ask petty questions like asking for directions.
Fear: Most residence are afraid of asking since they might be misdirected by conmen or thugs. Asking help from a stranger is extremely difficult as one does not know the agenda of the one giving directions. This fear makes people to judge people mentally that they are thugs or conman and women. This fear may make us to be a target.
Global trend: With the emergence of GPS, one may not be able to ask for directions for the fear of been portrayed as illiterate “Mshamba”. The GPS at times maybe difficult for some individuals to interpretate due to its complexity or lack of know-how to read and understand.
Survival instincts: The residence believe trusting their vibes to the end, without asking for help. One believes that they can do the “Rock Paper Scissors” to find their away around the streets.
Lies of been there before: When one originally stated that he/she knows the place, or visited at one point or another, it will be difficult for one to admit they are lost to maintain their status among peers.
The factors above play a key role in defending why Nairobian`s never admits they are lost even if they are. They are better of take them to their grave than admit defeat. It all about maintain one’s image and fitting in with people easily.
