Introduction: women’s empowerment is a critical component of achieving sustainable development. Despite progress in recent years, women and girls continue to force significant barriers to equality including access to education, employment, and healthcare.
As a sparkles contributor, I’m passionate about amplifying women voices, promoting empowerment, and exploring the complexities of gender issues . In this article I’ll share stories of women who are breaking down barriers and challenging norms in the matatu economy. Being a working mother in matatu economy, Jane a single mother who has five kids wakes up every morning at 5 am to get her kids ready for school before heading to work. Despite the challenges, Jane is determined to provide for her family and give her kids a better life. Her story is a testament to the resilience and strength of women in matatu economy. In many African cultures, aunty play a significant role in shaping the lives of young girls. However, when aunties become gatekeeper of societal norms and expectations, they can inadvertently stifle ambitions and dreams.
Many women in the matatu economy face challenges that they dare not to speak about., such as being harassed, and intimidated to unequal payment and limited opportunities making women suffer in silence. I Stopped shrinking myself to fir into wife material expectations as I valued independence, I rejected traditional gender roles and I choose to embrace individuality. I desired to be assertive and confident, as I’m not afraid to express my opinion, as I stand up for myself and assert my needs. I priotise my own growth, learn and self improve as I refuse to be limited by societal expectations
The health benefits of women’s empowerment are significant. When women are empowered, they are better able to make informed decisions about their health and well-being. Moreover, women’s empowerment can lead to improved health outcomes, including reduced maternal and child mortality. However, women often face significant barriers to healthcare, including limited access to healthcare services, and lack of control over their own bodies.
In conclusion, women’s empowerment is essential for achieving sustainable development. By promoting women’s economic empowerment, health, and well-being, and by taking a multifaceted approach to addressing the root causes of inequality, we can create a more just and equitable society. It is time for policymakers, business leaders, and individuals to prioritize women’s empowerment and work towards a future where every woman and girl has the opportunity to thrive in
